Canadian fintech huumans announces $1.35M in seed funding from Gremlin Ventures

Bookkeeping-as-a-service platform to invest in hiring and new technology to support small business owners.

November 28, 2022 - Halifax, CANADA — huumans, the Canadian bookkeeping-as-a-service platform, today announced that they have closed on a $1.35M seed investment from Gremlin Ventures. This round of financing will enable further development of the huumans platform which provides bookkeeping services and powerful business insights to SMBs across Canada.

“The finance industry tends to view entrepreneurs as “high risk”, and it can be difficult to navigate conversations about accessing financial products without highly-detailed records of their business,” said Paula Festas, huuman’s Chief Revenue Officer. “We are on a mission to support SMBs on their journey to sustainable growth, and this seed funding is critical to providing the tools, insights, and resources business owners need to feel empowered.”

Last month, huumans’ co-founders Bill Murphy and Richard Landzaat, also co-founders of Canadian payroll SaaS company Wagepoint, announced the national launch of huumans’ bookkeeping service specifically targeted to small business owners who currently use, or plan to use, cloud accounting software solutions like Xero or QuickBooks.

“Our goal is to make running a small business as accessible as possible, and to do that we’ll need to implement cutting-edge technology and hire a best-in-class team to execute on our roadmap”, said Bill Murphy, co-founder of huumans. “This seed investment lays the foundation for our next stage of development, which includes providing real-time business insights to our customers so that they can make informed financial decisions faster.”

Following this seed investment, huumans is preparing to hire an Operations Director, as well as several critical new roles. The company also plans to scale its in-house tax service offerings, and innovate on its existing customer-facing dashboard by adding AI-driven business insights and actionable data. The company has plans to pursue its Series A funding in the next 12-18 months.
